Far Hills

Far Hill was originally part of Bernards Township until 1921 when the village residents voted to sucede. The railroad and a search for land to develop into estates for his wealthy clients brought a gentlemen named “Schley” to the area in the 1880’s. Through his influence, the Delaware Lackawanna railroad continued it’s line from Bernardsville to Peapack. Far Hills became a rural area devoted to farms, large estates and equestrian properties. In 1907 Schley built stables and grandstands at what is still known today as the Far Hills Fair Grounds. The fairgrounds host the very popular Far Hills Races each September which brings hundreds of people to the elite tailgating event each year. Far Hills has a very low population of about 900. Far Hills students attend Bernardsville’s elementary middle and high schools
